Basic Skills

There are some basic skills that all speakers should master.  They are good to review and practice througout your speaking experience.  Beginers should also review the SPAR page and the Impromptu page.

For those of you who are simply needing help writing a talk, you will also want to review the Oratory page.  Here are some basic guidelines to help you in preparing a speech or talk.

-Start with an attention grabber.  It should be something that draws the audience into your presentation and sets the stage for your thesis.  It could be a story, a metaphore, or anything that really grabs the attention of the audience.

-Present your thesis.  It should be short and sweet, a sentence long.  i.e. Amnisty should be granted to all imigrants.  It should be what your talk is about.

-Present your main points of your thesis, reasons it is true, and evidence to support those points.

-Conclude by referencing your attention grabber and thesis.
