Vision
The vision of the Orem Scholar School is to provide low-cost weekly classes for homeschooled teens who are serious about gaining a liberal arts leadership education while preparing for college. Classes are held only once a week in order to leave plenty of time for students to study during the week. The Orem Scholar school is family-centered. Parents should be highly involved in their student's education and the school, and most of the activities are for the whole family.
While socializing is one fun aspect of Scholar School, it shouldn't be the main reason for attending. Students should be motivated and want to learn.
Classes are taught by mentors who help students to study and think and to express their ideas through classic books, discussions, and student-chosen projects. We use a TJED philosopy of teaching as espoused by the Keys of Great Teaching (below.)
A liberal arts education creates a more well-rounded person, no matter what discipline the student is intending to enter. We do understand, however, that students should have marketable skills in order to earn a living. Thus we place an emphasis on preparing students for college by knowing how to use textbooks and take tests and also providing opportunities for students to earn college credit through AP testing.
The Orem Scholar School is beginnings of a New Commonwealth School, so as it grows and develops may become re-chartered into one as it is deemed necessary.
